Look Engineering as a Profession Look Engineering as a Profession Engineers are optimistic about their ability to meet global challenges over the next 10 to 20 years and expect to do so by working in increasingly interdisciplinary teams of professionals. A survey The State of Mechanical Engineering Today and Beyond, conducted by the ASMEusing society members and nonmembers in engineering-related positions,also reports engineers believe they will require additional competencies and skills outside of the offerings in current degree programs.The survey, conducted in 2011 when unemployment welches higher than today and the nuclear accident at Fukushima in Japan was commanding headlines, shows most respondents still showing optimistic to moderately optimistic views about engineerings ability to meet global challenges. That view holds across career and supervisory levels, although there are exceptions. Only 34% of respondents felt good about the aerospace industry, where the space shuttle program is winding down and the industry is downsizing.Survey respondents identified energy and related areas such as sustainability or renewable energy as an engineering discipline they considered to be the most cutting edge over the next two decades. Close behind are bioengineering/biomedical, nanotechnology, and water.Engineers were asked an open-ended question on which disciplines or topics in engineering they thought would be considered the most cutting edge in the next 10 to 20 years.Engineers also were asked which, if any, disciplines or areas would become more prominent, and classify them as fading, enduring, or emerging. Medicine and nanotechnology again were significantly supported in the emerging category. No more than 24% of respondents for any category believed them to be fading.Similarly, engineers were asked to categorize a list of tools and techniques in the same manner. Few respondents believed any to be fading. This finding suggests that, in the opinion of the verw esen engineer, the current skill sets remain robust and relevant to meeting todays needs, and that those skills are expected to continue to serve them well into the future, say the authors.Many of the skill sets were categorized often as emerging and enduring, suggesting that respondents feel technologies such as motion simulation, animation, and virtual prototype creation are now cutting edge but will continue to play a strong role going forward. More mature technologies such as 3-D CAD, computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, and project management are considered growth areas while a large percentage of engineers believe Six Sigma, ISO certification, and MathCAD to be enduring.Basic engineering disciplines will continue to be indispensable, according to the report, and communications skills together with those in computer software are critical for success. Early career engineers place greater importance on computer programming and software skills, while mature or se nior engineers focus more on communication.This chart shows the difference between the emerging and enduring responses for each tool/technique.Engineers will need to have the skills to communicate their designs through all types of electronic and data communications, said one respondent. The engineering world is becoming more electronic and digital every day.Respondents believe communications skills such as business writing, technical writing, public speaking, and presentation preparation will be even more critical as engineers work in and among more varied groups. The skills needed to successfully work in global, borderless markets and to understand and manipulate economics also include knowledge of languages and culture. This indicates a strong belief among respondents that these market trends will continue at a rapid pace or possibly accelerate, requiring engineers of the future to focus on developing what they binnensee as crucial global relations skills to keep pace, states the survey.Rising energy and environmental needs and challenges are expected to take up a lot of engineers practice in the coming decades. Respondents cited renewable energy sources, with solar and wind as the primary technologies, along with nanotechnology as areas where engineers will require more training and knowledge. Other industries related to energy and environment are also highly ranked. They include green building technology, energy storage, smart grids and greenhouse gas mitigation, among others.The most conspicuous note of pessimism is in doubts about being able to sufficiently deal with the needs of expanding populations in developing areas of the globe, particularly in sanitation, clean water, and food. How will this help my resume pass the resume test? Wont the recruiter read about my education in that section of my resume? Yes and no. While recruiters are on the lookout for details about your credentials in fact, its one of the top six items they focus on during their initial review they also tend to scan the resume very quickly. By leading off with the acronyms at the top of the resume, youre ensuring the recruiter doesnt accidentally overlook one of your selling points.Contact informationInclude your mobile phone number and an email address youve designated for your job search. If you havent set up your phone to receive voicemails or recorded a voicemail greeting, add this to your list of to-do items. When selecting your email address, I recommend creating one on a platform like Gmail that incorporates your professional name and is dedicated to job-search and networking activities. This will help you keep your job search organized and avoid and any age di scrimination sentiments that often are associated with outdated emails such as a comcast.net or optonline.net.Its no longer necessary to include your full mailing address at the top of your resume. Instead, share the city, state, and zip code if youre searching for a job close to home, or remove location information entirely if youre interested in relocating for work.Supporting mediaWhile the resume tends to be a very cut-and-dry schrift of document, there are ways to give employers a better sense of your personality, creativity, and subject-matter expertise. This is where the magic of hyperlinks begins.Below or adjacent to the contact information in your header, include links to websites that shed some light on these areas of your professional brand. For instance, its now commonplace to include the URL to your LinkedIn profile (Hint If you havent created one yet, nows the time.)If youre applying for a position that involves working with social media, you may include links to your p ersonal social media accounts as well. This is also a great place to share the link to your online portfolio (for those in creative fields) or your personal blog (for writers and subject-matter experts). A word of caution, though If you intend to include a link to any of these resources, make sure youre regularly updating the information and that the content supports your professional brand and current job goals. For example, theres no need to include a link to your blog about basketball if youre applying for corporate finance positions.HeadersAll the sections I mentioned above should be included in the top portion of your resume. However, dont insert this information into the actual header portion of the ja genau document. This can get scrambled by the applicant tracking systems (ATS for short) and cause confusion for the recruiter. It may even cause your resume to not pass the ATS resume test. Instead, decrease your top margin on the document to 0.5 inches and place your name, con tact information, and hyperlinks at the top of the page.If your resume is more than one page long, make sure your contact information is repeated at the top of the subsequent pages. You dont want the recruiter to have to hunt for your phone number or email address if theyre ready to speak with you.Professional titleWhen someone takes a look at your resume to see if you pass the test, there should be no question as to the type of role youre targeting in your job search. All too often I hear clients complain that they arent receiving the type of job leads that they want, whether theyve been individual contributors for many years and are currently seeking a management position, or they want to return to a field they worked in several years ago but only receive offers for work that correlates with their most recent experience.To help remedy this situation, and ensure your resume passes the resume test, make your job goals crystal clear, starting with the top third of your resume. Includ e a professional title that states your intent. For instance, you may put Senior Financial Planning Analysis Professional, Global Business Development Executive, or Entry-Level Marketing Professional, depending on your level of experience and target role. Please note that these sample titles indicate the professionals job goals without getting too specific. This makes it easier if youre applying to a few different types of roles within the same field. Def Jam Records Music Label Def Jam Records Music Label Fast Facts What: Hip-hop label Def Jam Recordings, part of the Island Def Jam Music GroupWhere: Headquartered in New York City, New YorkFounded: 1984Founded by: Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons (see more details below) The Founding of Def Jam Recordings   Def Jam Recordings was originally founded by Rick Rubin in 1983 in his New York University dorm room to release a single by his band Hose (a punk group). DJ Jazzy Jay introduced Rubin to Russell Simmons, who quickly became Rubins Def Jam partner. Along with Simmons, Def Jam Recordings released the T La Rock and DJ Jazzy Jay single Its Yours,  the first single to bear a Def Jam logo. As such, Simmons is credited as a co-founder. The first releases to bear both a Def Jam logo and catalog number were released in 1984: I Need a Beat  by LL Cool J and Rock Hard by the Beastie Boys. First Distribution Deal and OBR The first Def Jam singles garnered enough attention to allow the label to land a major label distribution deal with Columbia Records (a the time a subsidiary of CBS Records, which was subsequently bought by Sony). LL Cool Js classic Radio, released in 1985, was the first Def Jam release to receive major label distribution and was their first full-length album. Around this time, Def Jam tried to get into the RB business, founding the label OBR to cater to RB artists. They had a hit with The Rain by Oran Juice Jones, but the label folded shortly after. Varied Sounds and Rising Success During the course of the 1980s, Def Jams success steadily grew. The 80s marked the move of hip-hop from the underground into the mainstream, and Def Jam was instrumental in helping the genre make that transition. During the 1980s, however, the label was not exclusively a hip-hop label. One of their biggest signings of the decade was metal group Slayer. Def Jam achieved one of their biggest successes of the decade- and became the subject of a great of controversy- when they signed Public Enemy at the end of the decade. Rubin vs. Cohen During the 1980s, a power struggle was going on behind the scenes at Def Jam between founder Rick Rubin and Lyor Cohen, who had been working with Simmons who was managing Run D.M.C. In 1988, Cohen landed the role of president of Def Jam. Rubin left the label and started Def American Records, which was soon renamed American Records. Rush Associated Labels and Financial Troubles Cohen and Simmons founded Rush Associated Labels (RAL) in the early 1990s as an umbrella group for several different labels, including Def Jam. The new business ventures proved expensive. Def Jam had several multi-platinum releases in the early 1990s, including releases by ONYX and EPMD, but they were still facing severe financial troubles by 1992. On the cusp of bankruptcy, Def Jam was bailed out when Polygram Records purchased 50 percent of the label. Polygram eventually gained a firm control, buying another 9.8 percent of the company. Warren Gs Regulate...The G Funk Era was a sales success and helped the label further recover financially. RAL to Def Jam Music Group and Island Def Jam In 1995, RAL was renamed Def Jam Music Group. Power Struggles in the 2000s Def Jam Germany was launched in 2000 by Cohen to expand the labels profile internationally. Trouble arose for Cohen in 2003 when Murder Inc. Records was investigated for money laundering. Cohen had championed the label, and the investigation led to a raid of Def Jams building. Around the same time, Cohen left the label for Warner Music Group. Antonio L.A. Reid took over Def Jam after Cohens departure. Reid and Cohen fought for Jay-Zs contract, and to win the artist, Reid made Jay-Z president of Def Jam. Jay-Zs own Roc-a-Fella label had already been bought by Def Jam. Jay-Zs presidency contract expired in 2007, and it was not renewed, leaving Reid to step back into a leadership role. Treating people with respect and dealing with everyone in a fair and open matter are just two essential requirements for success as a manager.   When the Boss Plays Favorites If you have ever worked for a manager who plays favorites or, who treats people with different standards of accountability and performance, you understand how destructive this approach is to morale. In one case, the manager clearly viewed an employee as the star of the group, heaping public praise on him and ensuring that he was involved in the most visible and important projects. This star treatment created hard feelings with the other employees and was frequently referenced when discussing what it was like to work for the manager. Instead of attracting talent, the manager struggled to retain people on his team.   In another case, a manager made it very clear that those who succeeded on her team were the ones who helped her politically. Instead of focusing on the problems and challenges in the workplace, this manager generated a circus of political gamesmanship all intended to curry favor with her.   Establishing different sets of rules for different employees is the antithesis of fairness and creates ill will, poor morale and less than optimal performance across the team.   Fairness in the Workplace When you treat your employees fairly they focus on navigating the challenges in front of them. They feel respected, cared for, and they develop trust in you as a manager. Instead of focusing on gamesmanship or one-upmanship, employees focus on working towards individual and group goals.   When you treat others fairly two things happen. Your employees notice and respect you for it. Your reputation for fair play reinforces their belief in you. Second, the people who you treat fairly will respond in kind. You are teaching through your actions and modeling the behavior of fairness in the workplace.   How to Be a Fair Manager A good manager is one who treats every person she encounters with respect and fairness. Some suggestions for cultivating your reputation for fairness include:   The golden rule:  Treat everyone you encounter as you would like to be treated.  No favorites:  A manager who is fair does not play favorites. You dont give anyone all the good jobs, or all the bad jobs, just because of how you feel about them. You treat them as the unique individuals they are.Dont take advantage:  When youre being fair, you dont take advantage of others based on your position as the manager. You dont treat someone unfairly just because you can and can get away with it.Model the rules and behaviors:  When you follow the rules  and apply them equally to everyone, you are being fair. Make sure you apply them to yourself as well. Your do must match your tell, or people will lose trust in you.   Change the rules:  If you sense that the rules are unfair to individuals or groups, cultivate the courage to  change the rules. Just be sure that the reason you are changing it really is to increase fairness, not just to justify an outcome that might be better for a favorite. Make sure the new rule is applied equally for all.Think about how it affects others:  As you assign work, for example, think about whether you are doing it fairly, but also consider how others will perceive it. If you have a rule that everyone in the company has to pay $20 per month for the shared coffee in the lunch room, think about the stock clerk for whom that $20 is a major expense and about the accountant who doesnt drink coffee. Who does this rule affect them and is it fair? Be honest:  Be honest with your employees. Tell them why things are done as they are. Tell them why a specific procedure was put in place. Tell them about things you cant tell them, but only if there really is a reason why you cant. When you are honest with them you are treating them equally. You arent telling them that just because they arent managers they dont deserve the information. And be honest with yourself too. Look at why youre doing the things you are and in the way you are. The Bottom Line Credibility is critical to your success as a manager and nothing destroys credibility faster than the reputation that you play favorites or deal with people on an inconsistent basis. Be deliberate and even-handed about how you assign work, offer praise and share feedback. The benefits of cultivating a reputation as a manager who deals with people in a fair manner are priceless.
